I'm probably not the best person to comment football issues. But I'm sure I can comment the organization of a World Cup.
I admit I like events such as Euro and World Cups and I actually enjoy those great games full of adrenaline and anxiety. They are also major social events when peoples come together, when crowds gather under the same pretext, when we are aware we belong to a place and act in unisson with our fellow citizens. Besides, we are talking about hugely profitable events that generate revenue for the countries hosting them.
We were thrilled when we organized Expo '98. We were one of the happiest nations on Earth when we hosted the Euro 2004. We were proud that we had the Paris-Dakar starting in our capital. Why can't we host the 2018 World Cup on our own?
I know we went to pharaonic spending to build those ten stadiums, most of which are now virtually abandoned. I know we are a country a bit short of ten million inhabitants. I know it is highly arguable that, with so much we need to invest in health and education, we should be spending zillions to organize a mere football championship.
But if we do want to step forward and bring the organization of the 2018 World Cup to Portugal, why on Earth do we need Spain for? We're absolutely capable of doing great things on our own, are we not? If it's a question of financing the event let's forget the issue altogether. But if it really is to spend money anyway, hell let's spend it without a Spanish invasion.
If there's a Portuguese/Spanish World Cup, guess who's going to host the final game? Claro, nuestros hermanos! Guess where most games will be played? In Spain, naturally! That is, we spend the money, we go through all of the ordeals of organizing something like this, we go through all the crises and antagonism of the press, the public and the government being at each others' throats and then what? The Spaniards have all the glory!
No, I don't think there should be a Portuguese/Spanish World Cup. Either a Portuguese World Cup or no Cup at all. It's a question of: it's either our way, or no way. Sorry but I'm adamant on this one!
